How do I know what type of foot my little one has?

Last modified:

When we enter the world of barefoot shoes, we start reading terms that sound “Chinese” and we are overwhelmed with so much information. With this post I want to help you know what type of foot your little one has so that it will be easier for you to buy children’s shoes, well and for adults too!

You’ve probably heard of wide feet, medium feet and narrow feet, but how do you know?

The first thing you need to do is to measure the foot. To do this you have to place the pencil correctly. If you look at the tip of the pencil, in the area where it widens (it is like a cone) and where it ends is the tip that paints. The edge of the cone has to make a 90° angle with the paper, you have to compensate the thickness of the cone of the pencil. It is also important to use a pencil or pen with a fine point because if we use wide-tipped markers we are adding mm to the measurement.

Once you have the length and width measurements you only have to divide the length by the width. The result will tell you what type of foot you have by checking the parameters in the table below, but first I will explain it with an example to make it clearer:

Foot measures 17 in length x 7.2 in width

Divide 17 / 7,2 = 2,36

What about the instep? Low, medium or high?

Now it’s the instep’s turn, but there’s more! Because the foot is three-dimensional and knowing all its measurements will help you choose the right barefoot shoes for your child.

In this case we only have to take a tape measure and measure the height of the instep from side to side, without going around the foot.

Once you have the measurement, divide it by the length and check the result in the following table.

I continue with the previous example:

Let’s suppose that the instep measures 15 cm.

15 / 17 = 0,88

In this case it has a high upper.

Having all this information will make it easier for you to find the ideal barefoot shoes for your little one’s feet.
