Both feet and legs have a natural evolution in the first years of life. Let’s see how it is:
From birth to the first steps
During growth, each bone of the foot ossifies at a different age. The calcaneus has its ossification nucleus at birth, however, others such as the talus do not finish ossifying until 10-11 in girls and 12-13 in boys. You have all the information in: “Babies’ feet: care, evolution and footwear“.
From the first steps to 2 years of age
The usual position of the legs is that they are arched outwards. This is due to the insufficiency of certain muscle groups, but the use of the diaper also has an influence as it promotes a greater external rotation of the hips.
From 2 to 5 years old
With time, their legs change position, their knees usually come together, and their feet have a tendency to flatten. There are certain exercises, such as walking barefoot, standing on tiptoe or on the “lame leg” that will help the musculature of the foot and leg, favoring their correct evolution.
From 5 years of age
At around 5 years of age, it is normal for the legs to adopt a more upright position.
It is very important to strengthen the musculature and correct development of the foot and leg of our children during their first years of life, because a bad footprint can cause back problems, knee misalignments, … Hence the importance of a correct choice of footwear and size, when the child begins to walk. We have talked about this in “Baby shoes and first steps“.
How is the correct shoe size calculated?
To choose the right size for your hij@s, in addition to the length, it is also important the width so that their toes can move freely. In our Instagram post how to measure feet we show you how to do it.
